GYROTONIC® EXPANSION SYSTEM
Gyrotonic® is a relatively new system, created by Hungarian Juliu Horvath beginning in the 1970’s. As with most of the movement arts systems in use, Gyrotonic® grew out of Juliu’s own search for physical and spiritual health and growth.
In the Gyrotonic® system as in Pilates, intellectual engagement is an inextricable element in achieving full physical balance and health.
Gyrotonic®, as well as the “mat” form (without equipment) Gyrokinesis, is based on the natural harmonious movements of our animal body. In Gyrotonic®, spirals, circular and arcing paths of motion allow for a seamless, efficient transition from one movement to the next, and create a sense of renewed freedom of movement and ease of body.
It is a very functional form of conditioning because these are the movements we do every day: twisting, spiralling, lengthening and reaching.
Increasingly in our world, we are asking our bodies to refrain from moving. We drive in our car to work, sit at a desk (most probably), sit at lunch, drive home, sit to eat dinner and watch tv. And so it goes, to one degree or another, with most of us. Then on the weekend we may try to bull our way through tennis or golf, with predictable results: strains and discomfort because our bodies have forgotten how to move in anything but the sagittal (forward and back) plane.
Our bodies are hungry for the twisting and spiralling movements that should be part of our natural repertoire of physical activity. Gyrotonic® answers that need and with the practice you gain a new awareness of your own body and it’s full capabilities. You are completely refreshed and energized and aware.
